About
About this site…
Scenic explorer was created in September 2007 after I moved from upstate New York to Denver, Colorado. It was created from combining a personal blog about hiking in upstate NY and a personal photo album. While in Denver, it became a place to write about my adventures in Colorado and share many of the thousands of photos I’ve taken. Today I’m living in Wisconsin and the site continues to be a place to write about my exploration of all things outdoors.
About me…

I picked up nature photography as a hobby back in 2003 while walking along the beach in North Carolina. Since then I’ve taken lots and lots of photos and have made this hobby a nice compliment to my long time interest in the outdoors (e.g. hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing).
I’ve done a fair amount of traveling, I think I’m up to about 34 states so far, and have lived in 6. I grew up in New Jersey and spent most of the last 30 years or so in various places between Maryland and Upstate New York. Some of my favorite places are in Alaska, Vermont, New Jersey, Virginia, and Colorado.
I spent about 13 months (2007-2008) in Colorado completing my pre-doctoral internship in psychology. While there I was able to do a lot of exploring along the front range each weekend. In July 2008 I arrived in Wisconsin to complete a one year post-doctoral fellowship in geropsychology (geriatric psychology) and plan on seeing as much of Wisconsin and the Midwest as I can in the next year.
In my camera bag…
It seems to be common that photographers have a blurb about what they use. So here’s mine: a Nikon D50, Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens, Nikkor 55-200VR, Nikkor 35mm f/2D, my grandfather’s 45(ish) year old tripod, way too many filters, and the Canon Powershot S400 Digital Elph as a backup camera.
Groups I belong to…
I was very fortunate to come across a great group of hikers and photographers through Outdoor Eyes upon my arrival in Colorado. I have attended several of their group hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park and have learned a lot from some of their members. I have also found the articles and feedback from folks over at the Nature Photographers Network to be a great resource.
