Site Reloaded

After several attempts at new versions of the site, I’ve decided to return to the original. I’ve restored most, if not all, of the content. Though, a few images may be misplaced yet. I noticed some posts showing up in the stats area that don’t lead to the post they are supposed to, but that may just be a temporary stats thing. I am working on a new photography site and will integrate this blog with it, but that may take a while. I’ll be posting more soon.

Autumn Break

It has been about a year since I started this site as a record of my adventures in Colorado. Now that I’m in Wisconsin for a year and my photography skills have grown, its time to make a few changes. With that in mind, I’m going to be taking a break from posting here for a few weeks.

During that time, I will be researching locations for fall colors, studying some of the technical aspects of photography I’ve been wanting to learn, sorting through many of the photos from the last year, looking into redesigning this site, and putting plans together for a professional website. I will also be updating my personal photo album as it has been neglected over the last few months.

Great Blue Heron

I went back to Wehr Nature Center today to try my luck photographing the falls at Mallard Lake again, but I found the falls were reduced to a trickle. I was surprised at first, but then realized it hasn’t rained here in a good month, maybe more. As I walked down the creek, I came across a great blue heron searching for breakfast. I was there about 7:30am, which made for rather low light under the trees. The best two images are below. Closeups on each are pretty sharp, though I think its hard to tell given I’ve reduced the size and quality for the web. In addition to the heron, I captured some nice images of this blue wildflower.

Minooka Park (Waukesha County)

I headed out to Minooka Park earlier today with a colleague for a 3-mile hike. As we walked along a small lake, we saw one of these guys flying around.

He happened to get too close to the frog below and ended up being a late afternoon snack! (look closely at the frog’s mouth, part of the dragonfly is still sticking out).

If it weren’t for having to change lenses to get the frog, I would have likely seen the frog snatch the dragonfly myself, and maybe would have even gotten a good shot of it. It’s always very cool to see nature happening right in front of your eyes.

Boerner Botanical Gardens

I visited Boerner Botanical Gardens last month and had an enjoyable walk around the grounds. While its not as big as other botanical gardens I’ve been to, it does have a nice variety of plants and flowers. It also has a very large rose garden.

Wehr Wildflowers

Also from the nature hike at Wehr, some of the many wildflower photos. I will be adding more to the gallery as soon as I sort through them all.

Butterflies Abound

I went for a nature walk at the Wehr Nature Center over the weekend and saw quite a few butterflies out and about. In fact, I think I’ve seen more butterflies in my last few weeks in wisconsin than I have seen anywhere else. I’ve also seen a lot of dragonflies around and have dozens of photos of them to go through yet.

Here are two views of a fairly large yellow butterfly that was quite a ways away.
